The Cabo Blanco Absolute Reserve is one of the oldest protected areas in Costa Rica. The Cabo Blanco area became a reserve in 1963 due to the efforts of the two Danish residents. Such individual efforts to protect the environment are on an excellence.

Ed Mercer the Co owner of Vantana Del Pacifco, an environmentalist and real estate developer is an individual in Costa Rica that has been lauded worldwide for his exemplary efforts to save the endangered wildlife species and protect the environment by reforestation efforts. Hailing from Canada, Ed came to Costa Rica in 1989 venturing into the land development business. Ed observed that the scarlet macaws were hunted for their colorful feathers, turtles for eggs which were used for aphrodisiacs and monkeys for pet purposes. Not only did Ed deploy the security guards and cordoned off the area, but also ensured the planting of five thousand almond trees that filled the once bereft skyline of Costa Rica with the breeding pairs of macaws and increased the population of monkeys. Ed provided fresh protected nesting beaches for the sea turtles that increased their population as well. For these pioneering efforts, Ed Mercer got inducted into the prominent Environmental Hall of Fame in a star studded ceremony held in June at Los Angeles. The environment friendly projects of Ed’s real estate company meet the strictest of the principles, be it the housing or construction work that by no means of disrupting the biodiversity of the old lush green rainforests. The real estate company of Ed Mercer directs a fraction of its each and every sale to build up the infrastructure of Costa Rica as well as the reforestation efforts in the region.

Ed’s golden philosophy of life has been to under promise and over deliver. As a self taught entrepreneur, Ed Mercer took up small businesses and turned them into the money making machines, some within as little as sixty days. The goal of Ed’s foundation has been to work for the improvement of the earth taking education and ecological conservation as a means to achieve sustainability. Fondly known as Mr. Costa Rica, Ed recently met the Costa Rican President Arias to discuss the Alliance for New Humanity project. The humanitarian issues have always been dear to Ed’s heart and he considers the formation of his enterprise, Edward R. Mercer foundation, as his greatest achievement in life.

Liza, Nick Lev and Poya, one of the pleased customers of Ed’s real estate investment property, wanted to thank Ed from the bottom of their hearts for the wonderful time they were having at his company’s guesthouse. It has been a life time experience for them. They thank Ed for showing them this part of Costa Rica as a real paradise. Another bunch of buyers such as Steve and Ida thank Patrick, Marcel and Nancy of Ed’s team for their help and letting them have a astonishing time.

In this beautiful second home of Ed, Cabo Blanco absolute reserve did not allow visitors from 1963 to 1989. The park, however, became a strict nature reserve in 1989. This means that there is a limit to the amount of people who can visit it. The two Danish residents wanted to put a stop to the persistent deforestation that was destroying the natural areas in the Guancaste province since the early fifties. The Cabo Blanco reserve owes its name to the particular island that is closest at it tip. Since the island is mostly covered with guano deposits of the above lying seabirds, hence the name of the park is Blanco which signifies white. The reserve is a safe shelter for about one hundred and nineteen species of plants and a wide range of animal species as well. Among the plants, spiny cedar, balsam, lemonwood, gumbo-limbo tree and the chicle tree find protection in the reserve. Among the animal species, coatis, agoutis, sloth, turkey, vultures, coral snakes, boa constrictors, squirrels, monkeys and rat eating snakes abound.
