Homeowners always need to be on top of home maintenance to ensure that they are not inflicted with many kinds of disasters. They can do many things to curb these major catastrophes by catching these problems before they start and making sure that these incidences do not occur in the future. For many homes, especially older ones, the most common cause of damage is water.
When water damage, which is not like other common home damages, is undetected or is permitted to continue for quite some time, mold and rot have a tendency to occur deep in the homes foundation. Its not uncommon for these damages to occur in places that are hard to reach.
When a homeowner sets up their washer, they generally connect it to both the hot water line and the cold water line. When you do an inspection of the lines, make sure that you inspect the hoses and the water line ends. Begin with the joints. Any leaks you find will need to be take care of immediately either with special glue or duct tape. If you are unable to fix your washer, hire a professional to help you.
Every three months, replace and/or clean out the washer filters. Doing so keeps the filtered from becoming blocked which will slow down the water in the washer, leading to two problems. First, blocked filters can cause mechanical malfunctions. Second, a blocked filter can cause your water bill to skyrocket. If you live in an area that is susceptible to hard water, increase this preventive maintenance routine. Be sure to examine the shut off valve for leaks. Should there be any, replace it.
The majority of household appliances have hoses so its important to check them out to ensure that they are not leaking or frayed. Make sure the water connection and back of the washer is about four inches apart from one another. If you see problems with the hoses, replace them. Consider purchasing the steel braided hoses for its longevity. If not, youll be replacing those ordinary hoses at least two times a year.
The ventilation hose that your dryer is connected to needs to be replaced every two years. Be sure to check it thoroughly and often to ensure that there are no holes/tears. Remember that this ventilation hose but connect to the outside world. For this reason, animals/insects can chew on it, causing you problems down the road. Ensure that the vent pipe isnt clogged by looking for lint behind and under the dryer. Clean out the lint trap after each dryer load so that the appliance does not overheat, which can cause the hoses stress.
The homes utility sink is another place water can build up so be sure you look for leaks under and behind it. If you find water puddles or water discoloration, theres a leak. If you see boards that have sunk in, theres been a problem in the past. Other possible signs is drips in the sink trap and slow draining pipes. Be sure to call in a professional immediately.
A good way to get rid of clogs is to use household cleaners such as Drain-O. However, should these fail, you should never try to fix it yourself. Dripping faucets and cracked/loose sink seals should be replaced immediately. If you notice damp and/or stained walls around plumbing pipes, this is a strong indication of an internal leak. You should fix this immediately before further damage.
