If you are standing in the middle of the kitchen with water backing up and overflowing on to the floor, then you know that you need to call someone, fast. But how do you know how to ensure your plumber does not over charge you? You can’t stand around and wait to make phone calls to everyone in the neighborhood!

If you have a little bit of time, then you should start making some phone calls to friends and neighbors. Find out who they have used in the past who was reliable and charged a reasonable price that did not eat up the entire contents of their wallet.

If, however, you are stranded in a type of situation such as the one above, then you do not have any time to spare with phone calls around the block. Simply call the first person that is able to come and you will take care of the price when he arrives.

When he arrives, ask him for a list of sample pricing before he begins his work so you can see in writing what reasonable fees are for standard jobs. As long as you have this, then you just need to keep an eye on what he is doing so you know how much you can expect to pay. If you carefully question him before each procedure, then it will keep him in line so he will not do anything extra in order to be able to ask for more money.

If he does not have a list like this, and chances are that he won’t, then describe the problem and request an estimate before he sets out to fix it. This will keep him within a price range and allow you the opportunity to bargain a little bit if it sounds extremely high.

The best approach is always to seem self-confident and knowledgeable in the area of prices for plumbers, even if you have never dealt with this before. He will assume that you know what you are talking about and will be much less likely to quote an unreasonable price.

If you want to know how to ensure your plumber does not overcharge you, then it is simply a matter of acting smart and seeming confident. Hopefully, you will end your day with a sink that works and a little bit of money left over in your pocket for all of your other expenses.
