You can choose from two different ways to clean your gutters on your house. Here is a description of what you will need to do for the two different ways.
Using a leaf blower
1) You will need to have a leaf blower, extension ladder, a rope, safety glasses, and dust mask.
2) The easiest way to get the leaf blower onto the roof is to tie one end of the rope to the leaf blower and the other end to the top rung of the ladder. Once you get on the roof you can then hoist the leaf blower easily.
3) Before using the leaf blower, be sure to use wear your safety glasses and a dust mask. When using the leaf blower to clear the gutters always work from a safe position on the roof and don’t stand too close to the end of the roof.
Water hose usage
1) Using a small garden or hand shovel, remove any excess debris from the gutters. To reduce cleanup later, put the debris from the gutters in a trash bag rather than throwing in on the ground.
2) Using a water hose with a spray nozzle on the end, from the roof spray out the full length of the gutter from the high side to the downspout pushing the debris. You may need to use a scrub brush for stubborn areas of hardened dirt.
3) Spray water down the downspouts to ensure all obstructions are washed away. You may need to use a plumber’s snake to clear the exit point of the downspouts.
If you are looking for a way to reduce the number of cleanings or if you live under a lot of trees, you may want to have wire mesh or a leaf guard system installed. While these systems are not infallible, they will block a majority of the material from getting clogged in the gutters. Most systems like these are custom installed, just make sure they can be easily removed and reattached if cleaning is required.
